Executive Bios — Perry D. Tanner
Perry Tanner serves as vice president of Marketing and Information Management of EMS Technologies, Inc., a leader in advanced technology since its founding in 1968. Today, EMS has 1,000 employees and revenues of $300 million.
In this role, reporting to the president and CEO, Tanner is responsible for corporate marketing, business and communications strategies, in addition to providing executive oversight for EMS’s IT operations, including Business Systems, Operations, and Web Technologies.
Tanner joined EMS in December 2006 as vice president of Corporate Marketing, where he successfully helped unify EMS’s corporate messaging and raise the Company’s visibility to internal and external audiences. He was named to his current position in June 2008.
Prior to EMS, Tanner had a 20- year career at Scientific Atlanta, Inc., where he held a variety of marketing, sales and operations positions. Most recently, he served as corporate vice president of Marketing, from 2000 to 2002, helping Scientific Atlanta reposition its corporate marketing messaging and consolidate marketing across the company’s business sectors. The company enjoyed record financial performance in bookings, sales and earnings during that period.
Prior to leading Scientific Atlanta’s marketing activities, Tanner oversaw two company business units. As vice president and general manager of Satellite Television Networks, he helped that $100 million business reposition itself into two growth markets, cable programming and multimedia IP; modernized 80 percent of the unit’s existing product lines; and penetrated a U.S. market monopoly. As vice president and general manager of Transmission Systems Networks, a $220 million business providing optical, RF and passive devices to enable broadband multimedia, Tanner initiated several strategic acquisitions and new product launches, helping the unit exceed the company’s financial performance by 25 percent.
Tanner began his Scientific Atlanta career in 1981.
He has an MBA from Mercer University and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Georgia State University. He is a former member of the board of directors for the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and the Gwinnett Foundation, as well as a former member of Mercer University’s National Engineering Advisory Board.
